Blackburn Council Explores Geothermal Heat Network for Town Centre Decarbonization
lancashiretelegraph.co.ukBlackburn with Darwen Council is researching a district heat network to replace gas boilers in up to 120 buildings. The project aims to lower carbon emissions and energy costs by using a central low-carbon energy centre to provide heat across the town centre. Initial feasibility studies suggest deep geothermal extraction as the preferred energy source. If implemented, the network could save over 400,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent over 40 years and provide a stable long-term energy source for council and third-party sites.
