BKV Corporation announced the startup of its Eagle Ford and Cotton Cove carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) facilities in Texas. The Eagle Ford project captures CO2 from a natural gas processing plant and injects it underground, sequestering about 90,000 metric tons per year. Cotton Cove, a joint project with Banpu Power US, sequesters roughly 32,000 metric tons annually from BKV's own midstream plant. Both sites received regulatory approvals from the Texas Railroad Commission and the EPA. These additions bring BKV's operational CCS portfolio to three sites in Texas, including the earlier Barnett Zero facility. The company aims to reach a 1.5 million metric ton annual CO2 injection rate by 2028. BKV retains all environmental credits from the Eagle Ford project initially. The projects are part of a joint venture with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, showing continued investment in commercial-scale carbon sequestration infrastructure.

BKV now has three CCS sites running in Texas. The 120k metric tons combined is modest but shows they can actually build and operate these things. Curious about the economics without 45Q tax credits baked in.

Good point. The press release mentions retaining environmental credits but doesnt break down revenue. At 120k tons, even at current credit prices that is not huge money. Scale matters.

Eagle Ford took about 18 months from FID to operational. That is fast for a CCS project. Wonder if the injection well approval from Texas Railroad Commission was the gating item. Also curious about injection rates and pressure maintenance over time.

The EPA MRV plan approval is the more interesting regulatory step. That determines how credits get verified. Without that, no 45Q. So BKV cleared both state and federal hurdles which is not trivial.

Three sites now but 1.5 million ton target by 2028 means they need to scale up roughly 12x from current run rate. That is a big jump. Will need more partnerships like the CIP one to fund it.
