BITSH-3 Metal-Organic Framework: BITS Hyderabad Research on Selective CO2 Capture and Amine Sensing
urbanacres.inResearchers at BITS Pilani Hyderabad have developed BITSH-3, a zirconium-based metal-organic framework that selectively captures carbon dioxide and water while detecting small amines. In lab tests at 298 K and 55 bar, it absorbed up to 205 cc/g of CO2 with negligible uptake of nitrogen, methane, and hydrogen. The material also showed strong water adsorption and fluorescence-based sensing for ammonia and related amines, with detection limits below 1.3 ppm. BITSH-3 is still a research material. The study does not cover large-scale production, regeneration costs, or performance in real flue gas, so it is too early to call it a commercial carbon capture solution. Its main contribution is showing how pore size and molecular geometry can be tuned for selective separation, a design principle that matters for sorbents and sensors in industrial and environmental systems.
