Birmingham Airport reduced its location-based greenhouse gas emissions by 11% in the latest reporting period, cutting 798 tonnes of CO2 equivalent to reach a record low of 6,455 tCO2e. Total emissions have dropped 38% since 2019/20, even as passenger numbers climbed to 13.7 million. The airport now generates over 6,500 MWh annually from onsite solar, avoiding more than 1,150 tCO2e each year. It also expanded use of HVO fuel in vehicles, saving an estimated 131 tonnes of carbon. Emissions per passenger fell 16%, showing decoupling of growth from direct operational emissions. The airport achieved Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 4 earlier this year and is targeting net zero from direct operations by 2033. Key measures include LED lighting, heating and ventilation upgrades, and building efficiency improvements. BHX is also working with third parties to address emissions from aircraft and passenger surface access, including support for lower-carbon aviation fuels and sustainable transport options.

Solid numbers from BHX. 11% cut while passenger traffic hit a record is the kind of decoupling you want to see. The 6,500 MWh from onsite solar is doing real work here.

Agreed. The 16% drop in emissions per passenger is the metric that matters most for growth airports. HVO trial expansion is interesting too, though fuel supply chain details would help.

6,500 MWh from solar is decent for an airport site. I wonder what the installed capacity is and if they have battery storage to match the demand curve. Airports have weird load profiles.

Level 4 accreditation is meaningful. It means they are measuring scope 3 and engaging suppliers. The 2033 net zero target for direct ops is ambitious but the trajectory looks real. The real test is whether they can push airlines on fuel switching.

LED and HVAC upgrades are bread and butter efficiency. The 543 MWh saved from operational measures is the kind of detail I like. Would be good to know the payback periods on those retrofits.
