Birmingham Airport reported an 11% reduction in direct carbon emissions for 2025/26, even as passenger numbers rose 6%. Total emissions fell to 6,455 tCO2e, a 38% drop since 2019/20. The airport achieved this through onsite solar generation, LED lighting, HVAC upgrades, and switching to HVO fuel for vehicles. Emissions per passenger fell 16% over the year. The airport now generates over 6,500 MWh of electricity annually from solar panels, saving more than 1,150 tCO2e. HVO fuel use avoided an estimated 131 tonnes of carbon compared to diesel. BHX also reached Carbon Accreditation Level 4 and is targeting net zero from direct operations by 2033. Nice to see an airport actually cutting emissions while traffic grows. The 38% drop since 2019 is solid. Solar and HVO are doing the heavy lifting here.

Agreed. The per passenger metric is the one to watch. 16% drop in emissions per passenger means they are decoupling growth from carbon. That is the real story.

6,500 MWh from onsite solar is decent for an airport. I wonder how much roof and car park space that uses. Also curious if they are buying any offsets or if this is all direct reduction.

They mention Carbon Accreditation Level 4. That standard requires scope 3 engagement with suppliers and airlines. So they are at least tracking the harder stuff beyond direct ops. Net zero by 2033 is ambitious for an airport.

LEDs and HVAC upgrades are low hanging fruit but they add up. 543 MWh saved from operational measures is real. The HVO trial is interesting but fuel supply at scale is still a question mark for most airports.
