BioMCN is one of those projects that sounds good on paper but the economics are the real test. Bio-methanol premium over fossil methanol is not small. Who is actually buying at scale and for what end use?

From what I have seen, shipping is the main pull. A few container lines are ordering methanol-ready vessels. But the fuel supply chain is still thin. One plant in Delfzijl cannot cover much.

The article mentions biogas as feedstock. That means the actual carbon savings depend on what the biogas is made from and whether it would have been flared anyway. ISCC certification matters a lot here.

EU RED II and the upcoming FuelEU Maritime rules are the real drivers. Without those mandates, the premium would be hard to justify for most buyers. Policy tailwind is strong but not infinite.

Worth noting that bio-methanol is not the only low-carbon methanol route. Green hydrogen based e-methanol is also being developed. BioMCN has a head start but feedstock competition could bite.
