Labour energy spokesperson Megan Woods has proposed installing a fourth Rankine turbine at the Huntly Power Station to burn biomass pellets instead of importing LNG. This alternative aims to provide fuel security and lower emissions by using carbonised wood waste produced within New Zealand. While the initial cost of a new turbine is estimated at 800 million dollars, proponents argue it is a more sustainable long term investment than a 2 billion dollar LNG terminal. However, supply chain delays could push the operational date to 2031, creating a gap in energy security.
