A new study published in Biochar reveals that biochar's effect on soil carbon depends heavily on soil type. Researchers found that in acidic, mineral-rich soils, biochar reduced CO2 emissions by up to 12.9% by suppressing enzymes that break down organic matter. But in other soils, biochar actually increased emissions by stimulating microbial activity. The key mechanism involves hydroxyl radicals from biochar that damage soil enzymes, slowing carbon decomposition in some soils but not others. This means biochar is not a one-size-fits-all solution for carbon sequestration. Farmers and carbon project developers need to match biochar type and application to specific soil conditions. The study points to soil pH, mineral content, and microbial community as critical factors that determine whether biochar helps store carbon or releases more CO2. For carbon markets, this adds important nuance to how biochar projects should be designed and verified.
