Biochar Research Facility Opens in Himachal to Reduce Forest Fires and Boost Carbon Sequestration
thehansindia.comA new Biochar Research and Training Facility has opened at the College of Horticulture and Forestry in Neri, Himachal Pradesh, aiming to reduce forest fire risks by converting biomass like pine needles and lantana into biochar. The facility processes 1.5 tons of biomass per day and is a partnership between Y.S. Parmar University, the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, and ProClime Services. Biochar improves soil health, retains water, and generates carbon credits, offering a practical path for carbon sequestration and local livelihoods. The project addresses a key environmental challenge: forest fires fueled by dry biomass in Himalayan regions. By turning waste into a valuable agricultural input, it creates a circular economy model that also supports climate-resilient farming. The facility will also train students and researchers in biochar technology, linking academic research to real-world carbon offset projects. This initiative shows how local biomass management can contribute to broader decarbonization goals and community development.
