Biochar Industrial Group Raises $1.5m to Turn African Farm Waste into Carbon Credits
brandiconimage.comBiochar Industrial Group, a startup founded by former Releaf Earth executives, has secured $1.5 million in pre-seed funding to deploy pyrolysis equipment at agricultural processing sites across Africa. The company will convert nut shells, husks, and other residues into biochar and sell carbon-removal credits, with the processing units financed, installed, and operated on-site. Food processors supply the waste and receive a share of the value generated. The funding round, led by BREEGA with participation from Catalyst Fund and Mulago Foundation, will go toward hiring engineers and developing monitoring systems to track carbon removal. The company targets processors generating at least 2,500 tonnes of waste annually and plans to expand across the continent. The biochar market in the Middle East and Africa is projected to surpass $450 million by 2032.
