Biochar Industrial Group Raises $1.5M for Waste-to-Value Carbon Removal in African Agriculture
farmersreviewafrica.comBiochar Industrial Group, a climate tech company working in Sub-Saharan Africa, raised $1.5 million in pre-seed funding to expand its Biochar-as-a-Service model. The company works with food processing factories to turn agricultural waste like nut shells, cobs, and husks into biochar through continuous pyrolysis. That process locks carbon in a stable form and produces a soil amendment that can restore degraded farmland. The round was led by BREEGA with participation from The Catalyst Fund, plus non-dilutive support from the Mulago Foundation. BIG plans to co-locate pyrolysis units inside food factories, staff them locally, and share revenue with the processors. The company says field trials showed yield increases of up to 50% on treated plots. The funding is part of a broader push to build durable carbon removal capacity in Africa, where large volumes of non-edible agricultural biomass are available. The model connects waste management, soil health, and carbon credit generation in one operation.
