Researchers have developed a hybrid material combining biochar and polyzwitterionic hydrogels to increase the efficiency of solar-driven water evaporation. By using biochar derived from agricultural waste, the material absorbs more sunlight and improves water transport, reducing the energy required for desalination. This technology allows for higher evaporation rates and better performance in saline conditions. Because it utilizes biomass residues like sorghum straw, it offers a low-carbon alternative to traditional, energy-intensive desalination infrastructure.
