Biochar effects on soil warming and nitrous oxide emissions vary by soil type and feedstock

Researchers tested wood and rice husk biochar at two application rates in agricultural and forest soils across temperatures from 10 to 30 degrees Celsius. Forest soil had higher temperature sensitivity for N2O emissions, with Q10 values up to 2.84, while agricultural soil ranged from 1.13 to 1.63. High-rate wood biochar reduced temperature sensitivity in agricultural soil by lowering nitrate availability. But the same treatment increased temperature sensitivity in forest soil, even though total emissions dropped. This means biochar can lower baseline emissions while making the soil more responsive to future warming. The study underscores that blanket biochar recommendations won't work and that soil type, feedstock, and application rate all matter for climate outcomes.
