A new study published in Carbon Research shows that adding biochar to engineered green roof substrates significantly increases methane uptake. The research, funded by NSERC and conducted by scientists at Shenyang Agricultural University, demonstrates a practical way to turn green roofs into more effective methane sinks. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and this finding could improve the carbon benefit of urban green infrastructure. Green roofs already help with stormwater management and insulation. Adding biochar, a charcoal-like material made from biomass, enhances their ability to pull methane from the air. The study provides specific data on how much uptake improves, making it a concrete option for cities looking to lower their emissions footprint.
