BIMCO adopts biofuel clause to support shipping's transition to low-carbon fuels
shipmanagementinternational.comBIMCO has adopted a new Biofuel Clause for Time Charter Parties, aiming to simplify the use of low-carbon fuels in shipping. The clause addresses legal and operational challenges by providing clear definitions, fuel specifications aligned with ISO standards, and a structured process for sampling, testing, storage, and handling of biofuels. It also includes mechanisms for performance adjustments when using fuels with different calorific values, ensuring fair adjustments to speed and consumption warranties. The clause was developed with input from shipowners, charterers, fuel experts, and P&I clubs, reflecting best practices for safe biofuel use on board. BIMCO has also published similar annexes for LNG and methanol, with work on an ammonia annex expected to start this year. This move supports the industry's decarbonization efforts by providing a contractual framework for integrating alternative fuels into charter party agreements.
