BII Pledges $1.6 Billion for Southeast Asia Clean Energy, Targets 1.8 GW and Private Capital
carboncredits.comBritish International Investment has pledged $1.6 billion over five years for climate finance in Southeast Asia, with about half coming from BII and the rest expected from private investors. The UK development finance institution says the money will target renewable energy, transmission, EV infrastructure, waste, and water projects in Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand. BII expects the push to add around 1.8 GW of clean capacity and avoid about 1.7 million tonnes of CO2. The commitment builds on roughly $400 million BII put into regional climate projects between 2023 and 2025. Existing portfolio results include 358 MW of operating clean capacity and over 556,000 MWh of renewable power. BII is also routing part of the money through British Climate Partners and aims to direct at least 30% of its total new commitments to climate finance. The real test is delivery. Southeast Asia needs far more grid and storage spending, and IEA data cited in the article puts required annual grid investment at $50 billion by 2050, up from about $13 billion today. Whether BII's blended finance model can pull in enough private capital at that scale is the question worth watching.
