Bigadan launches Europe's first biogenic carbon capture and offshore storage chain via North Sea Greensand site
realassets.ipe.comDanish biogas producer Bigadan, backed by Arjun Infrastructure Partners, has completed Europe's first fully operational biogenic carbon capture and storage chain. CO2 captured at its Kalundborg Bioenergy plant was injected into the North Sea's Greensand facility, operated by INEOS Energy, marking a shift from pilot to industrial-scale operation. The company converts agricultural, household, and industrial organic waste into renewable gas and biofertiliser while permanently storing the biogenic CO2 under a contract with the Danish Energy Agency. Greensand's first commercial phase can store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, with potential to scale to 4-8 million tonnes per year as the market develops. This project demonstrates how integrated circular energy platforms can combine waste treatment, biomethane production, and carbon removal. For carbon market participants, it offers a concrete example of a fully paid, operational biogenic carbon removal value chain in Europe.
