Amazon and Google both reported significant carbon emissions increases in 2025, driven by the energy needed to power AI data centers. Amazon's emissions rose 16% to about 81 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent, roughly equal to 19 million gas-powered cars. Google's ambition-based emissions climbed 18%, with its own operations up 20%. Both companies have net-zero targets but are struggling to balance AI growth with climate goals. The data center power demand is also driving investment in US fossil fuel infrastructure, including natural gas plants. Google managed a small drop in Scope 2 emissions by sourcing clean energy despite a 37% rise in electricity use. Amazon's emissions from purchased electricity rose 34%. Microsoft and Meta have also reported large emissions jumps. Critics say the industry needs to do more to curb its carbon footprint as data center expansion continues.
