A local initiative in Monterey, California, is tackling textile waste by collecting clothing discarded by runners during the Big Sur Marathon. The collected items are sold at Last Chance Mercantile, preventing high volumes of fabric from entering landfills. Textiles make up roughly 15% of landfill waste, and the global textile industry accounts for 8% to 10% of total carbon emissions. By repurposing these garments, the community reduces the demand for new clothing and lowers the associated environmental footprint.
