Bhutan's First Gross Ecosystem Product Report Values Natural Capital at $6.2 Billion for 2024
english.ratopati.comBhutan has published its first Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) estimate, valuing the country's ecosystem services at around $6.2 billion for 2024. The figure covers forests, rivers, soil and natural landscapes, including carbon sequestration, water regulation, soil formation and biodiversity conservation. Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay announced the number during Climate Week and Science Summit 2026 in New York, alongside the 81st UN General Assembly. The stated goal is to include natural capital in national accounting instead of relying only on GDP. For carbon market watchers, the GEP is notable because it assigns a monetary value to services that usually sit outside standard economic indicators. Bhutan already operates as a carbon neutral country, and a published valuation could support future climate finance or results based payments. The open question is how the numbers were calculated and whether the methodology will be publicly verifiable. If the framework is transparent and repeatable, it could give other countries a practical model for measuring nature's contribution to their economies.
