Bharat Stage VII emission standards: what changes for cars, EVs and heavy vehicles
newindianexpress.comIndia has proposed new Bharat Stage VII (BS-VII) emission standards for vehicles, with phased rollout starting April 2029 for cars and SUVs, 2030 for small goods vehicles, and 2031 for buses and heavy-duty trucks. The draft rules keep existing tailpipe limits for NOx and PM largely unchanged but add real-driving emissions testing, on-board monitoring, and new limits for brake and tyre particles. The standards also cover EVs with battery durability requirements, including at least 75% energy retention after five years or 100,000 km. BS-VII is modeled on Europe's Euro 7 framework and aims to measure pollution under actual driving conditions, not just in the lab. On-board systems will track NOx, PM, and fuel or energy consumption, while an Environmental Vehicle Passport will give owners access to data. The change means automakers will need new testing equipment and monitoring technology, which is likely to push up new vehicle prices. The draft is open for public comments, and two-wheeler norms are expected later.
