Bengaluru air quality study: Traffic and weather trap toxic carbon monoxide and black carbon
researchmatters.inA four year study published in Theoretical and Applied Climatology tracked carbon monoxide and black carbon levels in Bengaluru from 2015 to 2018. Researchers from NIAS, Bangalore University, and IITM found that vehicle emissions are the main source of pollution, with CO levels rising about 52% over the study period. Black carbon averaged 3.28 micrograms per cubic meter and peaked at 9.5 micrograms per cubic meter. The study shows a clear daily pattern: pollution peaks during morning and evening rush hours. At night, the planetary boundary layer drops, trapping exhaust close to the ground. Winter and dry summer months see the worst air, while monsoon rains temporarily wash out black carbon. The researchers used WHO's AirQ+ model to link long term black carbon exposure to higher risk of ischemic heart disease. The data came from a single rooftop station in south Bengaluru, so it may miss variation in industrial zones or street level hotspots. Still, the findings give city planners concrete timing for when low emission zones or expanded electric transit could have the most impact.
