New research indicates that beaver dams significantly increase the carbon storage capacity of river systems. By slowing water flow and trapping organic matter, these natural structures create carbon sinks that store more carbon than they emit over long periods. Beyond carbon sequestration, these wetlands improve water filtration, recharge groundwater, and provide a natural defense against wildfires and flooding by maintaining soil moisture and regulating water release.
