The BEAM multi-arts hub in Hertfordshire demonstrates a practical approach to decarbonizing the built environment. By retaining the core of a 1970s theatre and adding an extension made from cross-laminated timber, the project significantly lowered its embodied carbon compared to a full rebuild. This project served as a pilot for the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, focusing on both operational energy efficiency and sustainable material procurement. It highlights how adaptive reuse in civic architecture can meet modern climate goals while preserving existing urban structures.
