The Forest Enhancement Society of BC has spent a decade implementing fuel breaks and thinning treatments to lower the risk of high-intensity crown fires. By removing understory debris and creating strategic breaks, the program improves the effectiveness of firefighting efforts and protects local communities. To further reduce environmental impact, the society's fiber utilization program diverts low-value wood debris to manufacturing facilities instead of open-burning it. In the 2025-26 period alone, this approach avoided approximately 180,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions while supporting local jobs in regions like Haida Gwaii.
