The Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC) is reducing wildfire risks and carbon emissions by diverting low-value wood fiber from traditional slash burning to secondary manufacturing facilities. In the 2025-26 period alone, the program moved 560,000 cubic metres of fiber, avoiding approximately 180,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. These initiatives include fuel breaks and thinning projects across British Columbia, including partnerships with the Council of the Haida Nation and the Nazko First Nation. By transporting debris to pulp mills and manufacturing plants, the program creates local jobs while lowering the overall social cost of carbon associated with forest management.

The logistics of 11,200 truckloads is a lot of diesel. I wonder what the net carbon math looks like once you factor in the transport and the emissions from the secondary manufacturing process.
