Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University have developed an artificial photosynthesis system that produces formic acid fuel from sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide without needing batteries or external control hardware. The key innovation is a self-regulating electrolyzer that uses a solid electrolyte to automatically adjust its electrical resistance as sunlight levels change, keeping fuel production stable throughout the day. The system was tested under real outdoor sunlight and successfully generated formic acid consistently. It was also demonstrated at the Osaka Kansai Expo 2025, where it powered a miniature diorama. This approach could lower the cost and complexity of solar fuel production by removing expensive battery-based maximum power point tracking systems. While still at the prototype stage, the technology points toward simpler, cheaper methods for converting CO2 into storable liquid fuel using only sunlight. If scaled, it could offer a practical way to store renewable energy and reduce emissions from fossil fuels.
