Battery-free artificial photosynthesis achieves stable solar fuel production

The system uses a special solid electrolyte in the electrolyzer that automatically adjusts its electrical behavior as sunlight changes, keeping fuel production stable throughout the day. This removes the need for expensive battery-based control systems. In tests under real sunlight, the device continuously produced formic acid from water and carbon dioxide. The team says the approach could lower the cost and complexity of solar fuel systems, making them more practical for home energy storage and other applications. The work was published in EES Solar.
