Battery-first service vessels for offshore wind cut fuel use and carbon costs, says Bibby Marine
cyprusshippingnews.comBibby Marine's new eCSOV uses a battery-first design where onboard dual-fuel generators charge batteries that power the vessel. The company claims fuel consumption is about 40% lower than conventional service vessels, reducing operating costs and exposure to volatile fuel prices and carbon pricing. The vessel enters service in 2027 and can operate on methanol or MGO. The design works without waiting for offshore charging infrastructure. Generators run at a steady, efficient load to recharge batteries, and the vessel can switch to fully electric operations as charging becomes available. This gives offshore wind operators an immediate way to cut emissions and OPEX while preparing for a zero-emission future. The eCSOV is under construction at Armon Shipyard in Spain.
