Chippenham-based heating firm Luthmore will show its Luthmore One electric combi boiler at Grand Designs Live 2026, running October 2-4 at the NEC Birmingham. The unit will be installed in the Grand House showcase, the event's flagship sustainable home, with Kevin McCloud's approval. Luthmore says the tankless boiler combines electric heating with battery storage so households can run it on off-peak electricity or self-generated renewable power. The boiler is priced at £4,950 plus VAT with a five-year guarantee. Luthmore, founded in 2022 by former Dyson employees, has also partnered with Wiltshire College to train local installers. Around 50,000 visitors are expected at the show, and Luthmore engineers will be at stand H82 to run demonstrations and answer questions.

Electric combi with battery storage is an interesting pitch. The key detail is whether it can actually shift enough load to off-peak rates to make the £4,950 price work. A five year warranty helps, but installer training and maintenance cost will decide uptake more than the show floor demo.

Battery enabled boiler sounds neat, but the practical question is what happens during a cold spell when the battery runs out and the grid is tight. It still needs a solid supply and a tariff that rewards shifting. Would like to see real field data on runtimes and standby losses.

Good to see a UK made low carbon heating option getting mainstream visibility. The policy question is whether it qualifies for any of the existing heat pump or boiler upgrade schemes. If it only works on time of use tariffs, that depends on market signals that are still being shaped.

Interesting that they are training local installers through Wiltshire College. That is the part that often gets overlooked. A new heating system is only useful if there are people who can fit and service it without a huge wait. More details on install cost and payback would help.
