Guangzhou Port has launched the Greater Bay Area's first zero-carbon container route. The 240 TEU battery-electric vessel Sui Gang Dian Hang 02 started cross-border service between Nansha and Hong Kong International Terminals, carrying furniture and consumer goods. The ship uses containerised batteries that can be swapped by crane or recharged directly, with an onboard platform tracking energy use, maintenance, and ship-shore operations. Operator estimates say each vessel in the series will avoid more than 550 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, and over 19,000 tonnes across its operating life. No sailing frequency, cargo commitment, or wider deployment schedule has been disclosed, so the near-term impact is still limited to a single route. The project is a useful example of battery-electric short-sea shipping, especially the exchangeable battery approach that reduces the need for long charging stops.
