British American Tobacco Nigeria has announced a full switch from diesel to compressed natural gas across its manufacturing operations. The company also installed a 1.4 MW solar system at its Ibadan factory as part of its clean energy push. The moves were announced on World Environment Day 2026, with the company reporting a 98.64% waste recycling rate and a 42% reduction in freshwater withdrawal since 2022. The transition from diesel to CNG eliminates one of the higher-emission fuels used in Nigerian industrial settings. BATN also highlighted its 100% zero-waste-to-landfill status at the Ibadan site since 2021. The company uses digital monitoring tools including a Global Manufacturing System and Smart Boiler technology to track energy use in real time. These steps show how a large manufacturer can cut operational carbon while maintaining production.

Agreed. The 42% water reduction is impressive too. But CNG is still a fossil fuel. The real test is if they move to biogas or electrify heat next.

1.4 MW solar on a factory is good but that's not a huge share of their load. Wonder what the backup plan is when the sun goes down. Grid in Ibadan is unreliable.
