BASF has added three new certified biomass-balanced additives to its architectural coatings portfolio: Dispex AA 4145 MB, Rheovis PU 1333 MB, and Rheovis HS 1169 MB. These products are certified under the REDcert2 standard and replace fossil-based raw materials with renewable feedstocks using a mass balance approach. The result is a reduced product carbon footprint without changing performance or requiring reformulation by coatings manufacturers. The new additives support pigment wetting and rheology control in interior architectural coatings, where sustainability demands are rising. BASF says the products are available globally and backed by technical support for easy integration. Mass balance is standard for these certifications. The real test is whether the PCF reduction is verified by a third party and if the renewable inputs are additional, not just diverted from other uses.

REDcert2 is a solid certification for bio-based feedstocks in Europe. But without seeing the actual PCF numbers per product, it is hard to judge how meaningful the reduction is. Could be 5% or 50%.

Nice to see chemical companies moving on feedstock substitution. But the energy used to process biomass still matters. If the plant runs on fossil power, the net benefit shrinks.
