Base Carbon Adds 640,000 Rwanda Cookstove Credits to CORSIA Pool as Aviation Offset Supply Gap Widens
carboncredits.comBase Carbon tagged 639,609 previously issued carbon credits from its Rwanda cookstoves project as CORSIA-eligible for the first compliance phase (2024-2026). This brings the project's total CORSIA-eligible credits to nearly 2 million, despite a market shortfall of 175 million tonnes between demand and supply. The credits use Verra's VM0050 methodology for improved cookstoves. CORSIA's strict eligibility rules create a premium for compliant units. IATA estimates first-phase demand at 213 million tonnes against only 38 million tonnes of supply. Base Carbon also noted a 39% rise in CORSIA Phase 1 futures since June, driven partly by the EU's integration of CORSIA into law. The Rwanda project, developed with DelAgua, has distributed 250,000 stoves and expects about 4.6 million credits over its crediting period, with future issuances likely to also be tagged for aviation use.
