Bareilly Cantonment in Uttar Pradesh has become India's first carbon-negative cantonment, according to a study by TERI School of Advanced Studies. The achievement comes after the defence minister set a 2030 carbon neutrality target during Manthan-2025. The cantonment board installed rooftop solar, switched to LED lighting, and expanded green cover to reduce emissions and increase carbon sequestration. TERI SAS assessed the net carbon balance and found the cantonment now absorbs more CO2 than it emits. The board says the approach can be replicated by other cantonments and urban local bodies across India. The result shows what targeted municipal action on renewables and green infrastructure can deliver at a local level.

Agreed. TERI SAS did the study so the numbers should exist. Without the net balance figure it is hard to compare this to other municipal carbon claims. Still a solid proof of concept for Indian cantonments.

Rooftop solar and LED lighting are low hanging fruit. The real question is how much of the carbon negative status comes from sequestration versus avoided emissions. If it is mostly tree planting, the permanence risk is higher.

Good point. The article mentions TERI SAS did the assessment but does not share the methodology. For replication, other urban bodies need to know the split between sequestration and direct emission cuts. Otherwise it is hard to set realistic targets.

LED lighting and rooftop solar are standard efficiency moves. The interesting part is the plantation based carbon sequestration. I would want to see the species used and the maintenance plan. Trees only work if they survive long term.
