Barcelona plans to turn a city street into a climate laboratory by 2027 using asphalt made with biochar from olive pits and pine waste. The project, selected through the city's urban innovation challenge, replaces conventional limestone filler in the top asphalt layer with carbon-rich biochar. BIT Habitat estimates this could cut CO2 emissions from that layer by up to 75%, while supplier Carboliva puts the manufacturing reduction at around 76%. Laboratory tests by the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya show the biochar mix matches conventional asphalt in resistance to water damage, cracking, and temperature changes. The research phase runs through September 2026, with real street pilots expected in 2027. The project has received a 90,000 euro grant from Barcelona City Council. If the material performs well under real traffic conditions, it could offer other cities a replicable model for low-carbon paving that also stores biogenic carbon. The pilot will be the key test of whether lab results translate to durability and cost-effectiveness at scale.
