Barcelona Tests Olive Pit Biochar Asphalt That Cuts Road Carbon Footprint by 76 Percent

The biochar is produced through pyrolysis, which locks carbon into a stable solid form instead of releasing it as CO2. Laboratory tests indicate the mix matches or exceeds conventional asphalt in moisture resistance, crack tolerance, and temperature stability. The project came through a municipal innovation contest organized by the Barcelona City Council. Winners received 90,000 euros in funding and the material is now being tested on a live street in the Eixample district. Spain is the world's largest olive oil producer, so the waste stream for this material is large and already concentrated. If the Cerdà Street pilot holds up through a full weather cycle, the city could write biochar asphalt into standard road procurement contracts. Related research is also testing olive pit biochar as a partial sand substitute in concrete, which would open a much larger market for carbon storage in construction materials.
