Barangaroo precinct in Sydney has powered up its fourth regional solar farm, the Carawatha Solar Farm in the NSW Riverina. This completes a 25-year green energy deal that secures renewable energy certificates at a fixed rate through 2050. The four solar farms generate about 55,000 megawatt hours per year, equivalent to powering 10,000 homes, and avoid over 40,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The precinct has now achieved 10 consecutive years of carbon neutral certification under the Australian Government's Climate Active program. The $48 million investment is funded by Barangaroo residents and businesses, not taxpayers, and supports around 260 construction jobs across regional NSW. The Green Product Purchase Agreement with CleanPeak Energy means tenants don't need to negotiate their own renewable contracts. This model aligns with the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap and adds new clean generation to the grid without relying on offsets or existing renewable credits.

Four solar farms for one precinct is a solid move. 55 GWh/year is decent for a single urban development. The 25 year fixed rate REC deal is the interesting part. Locking in price avoids market swings that kill project finance.

Worth noting these are in the Riverina, not near Barangaroo itself. So it's virtual PPAs via the grid. The 40,000 tonnes avoided per year is claimed but that depends on the marginal emission factor at time of generation. Still, adding new solar capacity is better than buying offsets.

The GPPA structure is basically a corporate PPA for a precinct. Centralizing REC procurement avoids each tenant having to sign separate deals. That reduces transaction costs. The question is whether the RECs are truly additional or just reshuffling existing certificates. The article says new generation, so probably additional.

260 construction jobs across four sites is modest but real. $20 million per site in construction stimulus sounds like a round number. Would like to see the actual capacity per farm. 55 GWh total from four farms means average ~13.75 MW each if capacity factor is 20%. That is small utility scale.
