Barama Company Limited champions sustainable building with local manufacturing and innovation in Guyana

Barama Company Limited is positioning itself at the forefront of Guyana's sustainable construction sector by embracing new building technologies and expanding local manufacturing. The company's General Manager, Mohindra Chan, spoke at the International Building Expo about shifting from logging to manufacturing plywood from species like Baromalli, creating higher-value products while supporting the country's Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS). Barama employs approximately 400 people directly, with women accounting for about half of the workforce. The company only harvests trees over 60 years old and supports communities in Regions One, Two, Six and Ten. Every sheet of plywood purchased supports local employment and strengthens Guyana's manufacturing sector through locally sourced timber and other inputs. The company's transformation over the past decade has opened new opportunities for Guyana while aligning with national environmental goals. By making better use of forest resources and creating sustainable jobs, Barama demonstrates how manufacturing can support both economic development and climate objectives in practice.
