Bangladesh unveils five-year green plan: 25 crore trees, carbon trading, and pollution controls
unb.com.bdBangladesh has introduced a five-year environmental and climate action plan as part of its FY2026-27 budget. The plan targets planting 25 crore trees, restoring degraded forests, expanding mangrove coverage, and creating around 3.5 lakh green jobs. It also includes a push for carbon trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, with 11 new projects and a national carbon market framework in development. On pollution, the government plans to cut plastic waste by 30 percent through a circular economy model, ban 17 single-use plastic items, and strengthen air quality monitoring with 15 continuous stations and 16 compact stations. It also aims to introduce electric buses and continuous emissions monitoring for major industries. The success of the plan will depend on tree survival rates, enforcement of pollution controls, and effective use of climate finance.
