Bangladesh has outlined a five-year environmental strategy in its FY2026-27 budget, focusing on pollution prevention, tree planting, and carbon market development. The plan targets planting 25 crore saplings, restoring degraded forests, expanding mangroves, and creating 3.5 lakh green jobs. It also aims to bring half of coastal mangrove forests under carbon trading mechanisms and pursue 11 new projects under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Air quality is a major component, with continued monitoring via 31 stations, new vehicle inspection centers, and plans for electric buses. The World Bank estimates air pollution caused over 159,000 premature deaths in Bangladesh in 2019. The success of the plan depends on enforcement and tree survival rates, not just planting targets.
