Bangladesh's Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo called for coordinated efforts across ministries to build a transparent and accountable carbon market. At an inter-ministerial meeting on the Bangladesh Carbon Market Framework, he said the international carbon market could open new opportunities for climate finance, technology transfer, and green investment. The government has drafted a framework under the World Bank's Partnership for Market Implementation program. The state minister noted that carbon trading has started on a limited scale through private initiatives but the government has not formally launched the system. The prime minister has directed a quick rollout. The government is also exploring carbon credits from a plan to plant 20 million trees in coastal areas. Accurate accounting and verification of emission reductions will be critical to meet Bangladesh's NDCs and ensure fair benefits for local communities.
