He cited World Bank data showing cyclones cost Bangladesh about $1 billion annually and warned that nearly 13.3 million people could be internally displaced by 2050 due to climate impacts. The minister described mangrove forests and coastal wetlands as critical national climate infrastructure, not just environmental assets. Mintoo called for stronger regional cooperation on blue carbon mapping, unified carbon measurement methods, and regional carbon markets involving countries like India, Thailand, and Indonesia. He also noted the government's target to plant 250 million trees over five years. The session was organized by ESCAP and the Landscape Alliance at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok.

Bangladesh has experience with community based mangrove restoration. The Sundarbans alone is a huge carbon sink. If they can tie that to verified credits and get international buyers, it could fund both conservation and adaptation. But the MRV gap is real.
