Bangladesh 5-year climate plan: 250M trees, carbon markets, plastic waste reduction
thefinancialexpress.com.bdBangladesh has announced a comprehensive five-year environmental and climate action plan covering afforestation, carbon trading, air pollution control, and plastic waste management. The plan targets planting 250 million trees, restoring degraded forests, and expanding mangrove coverage, with nearly 99 million saplings planned for the first fiscal year alone. It also includes bringing half of coastal mangroves under carbon trading mechanisms and pursuing 11 new Article 6 projects under the Paris Agreement. Air quality is a major focus, with expanded monitoring stations, new vehicle inspection centers, and electric bus deployment supported by a $290 million World Bank project. The plan also aims to cut plastic waste by 30% through a circular economy approach and bans on single-use plastics. Implementation will hinge on tree survival rates, enforcement of pollution controls, and transparent carbon market governance.
