Balance carbon planning service launches in Scotland for local authorities and developers
projectscot.comArchitecture and urbanism practice abc has launched Balance, a carbon planning service for local authorities, planners, developers and housing providers in Scotland. It quantifies whole-place emissions across buildings, transport, energy, waste, water and green space, then models how planning choices could reduce them. The service was developed with the University of Strathclyde, Innovate UK and Scottish Enterprise, and is already supporting Angus Council's emerging Local Development Plan. Balance also assesses nature-based solutions like tree and hedge planting, covering carbon sequestration plus benefits such as urban cooling, biodiversity and flood risk reduction. The stated aim is to give decision-makers an evidence base that connects land-use choices to net zero targets, including Scotland's 2045 goal. The formal launch took place at the Balance Symposium 2026 in Glasgow.
