Bahrain MP proposes civil nuclear power and small modular reactors in future energy plans
newsofbahrain.comA Bahraini MP has proposed adding civil nuclear power to the country's future energy plans, with the Electricity and Water Authority already studying small modular reactors. The proposal comes as Bahrain looks to cut reliance on conventional fuels and move toward cleaner, low-carbon power. The authority notes that SMRs are still being developed and tested globally, so any adoption would require licensing and safety assessments under international standards. Bahrain is also pushing renewables, aiming for 20 percent of its power mix from renewable sources by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2060. The MP highlighted that solar energy remains out of reach for many first-time homeowners and smaller properties, and called for stronger guidelines to get factories, companies, and public institutions more involved in renewable generation. The nuclear study is early stage, but it signals a wider shift in how Bahrain is weighing its long-term energy options.
