Bacton Hydrogen Hub: Repurposing a Norfolk gas terminal for low-carbon energy and net zero

The Bacton Hydrogen Hub (BH2) aims to convert the existing Bacton gas terminal on the Norfolk coast into a facility that produces low-carbon hydrogen using natural gas with carbon capture. The project repurposes existing pipelines and infrastructure to deliver dispatchable power during periods when renewables like wind and solar are low. Developers say this approach reduces costs and speeds up deployment compared to building from scratch. BH2 is designed to support energy security by reducing reliance on imported liquefied natural gas and stabilizing costs. The project also aims to retain local energy jobs and attract investment in East Anglia. However, the developer, Summit Energy Evolution, says it needs clarity from the UK government on hydrogen strategy before committing to the next phase of engineering design. The project is currently in feasibility and expects to start pre-FEED work by the end of 2025.
