Azerbaijan plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its transport sector by 600,000 tonnes by 2030, according to the Asian Development Bank. The target relies on deploying 3,000 electric buses, electrifying 1% of the truck fleet, and 5% of passenger vehicles. The ADB estimates the economic benefit at roughly $18 million. As of 2021, the country had over 1.3 million registered passenger cars and more than 160,000 trucks. The ADB also notes that Azerbaijan Railways is working on electrification, a decarbonization strategy, and setting up a carbon trading unit with ADB support. The biggest emission cuts are expected from shifting freight and passenger traffic from roads to rail, not just from electrification alone. The plan gives a concrete target and timeline for transport decarbonization in a fossil fuel producing country.
