AWS Adds Water Withdrawal Tracking to Sustainability Console for Cloud Customers

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has updated its Sustainability console to include annual water withdrawal data. The new feature lets customers see how much water AWS uses on their behalf, broken down by region, service, and account. This data is calculated using an independently reviewed methodology. The console already tracks Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, so teams can now view water alongside carbon in one place. AWS says its data centers are seven times more water efficient than the industry average and that it has reached 75% of its goal to be water positive by 2030. The company's water strategy focuses on reducing freshwater use, reusing water where possible, and investing in replenishment projects. In water stressed regions, AWS does not use water for cooling at all. The move makes AWS the first cloud provider to offer this level of water visibility based on actual customer usage. For sustainability teams, this means less manual data gathering and a clearer picture of the full environmental footprint of their cloud workloads.
