AVK-SEG Accused of Giving Fossil Fuel Industry a 'Lifeline' With Data Centre Carbon Capture Push
desmog.comDeSmog reports that AVK-SEG, a UK supplier of data centre power, is marketing natural gas microgrids as sustainable while lobbying the government to support gas-fired AI. The company operates a 90 MW gas microgrid at a Dublin data centre and is piloting two carbon capture projects in northern England. Experts say the capture technology is unproven and that selling captured CO2 for soda does not keep it out of the atmosphere. The story matters because UK officials badly underestimated data centre emissions and data centre operators have filed more than 100 gas connection requests since 2024. A 300 MW gas microgrid at Wapseys Wood has also been approved as nationally significant infrastructure. If these projects move forward, they could lock in fossil fuel power for AI for decades while carbon capture remains a marketing tool rather than a real climate solution.
